I Got This

Megan Carroll ’25

Choosing a college is a lot, I know. I’m really glad I chose Ƶ because it ended up being the perfect place for me, and I hope it’ll be the same for you.

I came to Ƶ from Ohio, chasing a few big dreams: playing Division I lacrosse, becoming a doctor, and finding my people. I’ve had amazing opportunities to do research, shadow doctors, and even work as an EMT. Being close to Northwell’s hospitals and care centers and the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research opened so many doors for me.

Balancing pre-med, lacrosse, work, and, well, life hasn’t always been easy – but it’s been so worth it. Ƶ gave me the space to try new things, mess up, figure it out, and keep going.

So, if you’re looking for a school that’ll change you, support you, and surprise you in the best ways – Ƶ is your spot.

You got this!

MORE ABOUT MEGAN

When Megan Carroll arrived at Ƶ from Ohio, she was looking for more than just a college experience – she wanted a place where she could push herself academically, continue her passion for lacrosse, and grow as a person. She found that community at Ƶ.

A health science major on the pre-med track, Megan dove headfirst into research and clinical opportunities made possible through Ƶ’s strong connection to Northwell Health and the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research. She participated in a clinical research internship after her first year, observing emergency medicine physicians and contributing to published research. That experience sparked a passion for health systems science, which she explored further as a summer scholar with the Feinstein Institutes. There, she worked on projects related to dementia, maternal loneliness, and patients’ goals – research that deepened her understanding of the human side of medicine.

But Megan’s experiences went beyond the classrooms and labs. She became an EMT with a local volunteer ambulance corps, eventually rising to the rank of lieutenant. She also worked as a beach EMT during the summer and competed (and won gold) at the Canadian-American Fire, Police, and EMS Games. And on campus, she balanced all this with a demanding lacrosse schedule and a tutoring job supporting other student-athletes in STEM courses.

“Being busy made me better,” she said. “It taught me to manage my time, trust myself, and really go after what I wanted.”

Megan shared that one of the most important parts of her Ƶ journey was the mentoring she received – from professors like Professor Maurice Hayon – who helped her build her confidence during the most challenging moments. “My professors believed in me when I wasn’t sure I believed in myself,” she said.

Now preparing to apply to medical school, Megan says the thing she’ll miss most is the people – especially her close-knit group of friends who turned late-night laughs in the Student Center into memories that will last a lifetime.

“Ƶ helped me grow into someone ready to take on what’s next,” she said.  “I’m leaving with lifelong friends, mentors who believed in me, and a sense that I can handle whatever comes next.”

» Megan’s story isn’t unique. In fact, among Ƶ’s 2022-2023 undergraduate degree recipients, 99% of alumni from the School of Health Sciences reported that they were employed or had started or were planning to start graduate school within one year of graduation. Results are based on data collected from the Alumni Outcomes survey, LinkedIn, National Student Clearinghouse, and Ƶ enrollment (78% knowledge rate).
